SCAN Health Plan Arizona Invites Community
to Take Part in the 2011 Walk-the-Fight Against Parkinson’s Disease
Fifth Annual Walk-a-Thon to Benefit Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center
(PHOENIX, AZ – January 31, 2011) — Employees of SCAN Health Plan Arizona are taking the lead for the second year in row, planning the fifth annual Walk-the-Fight, fundraising walk to benefit the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center of the Barrow Neurological Institute. Last year’s event raised more than $10,000 to fight Parkinson’s disease. The event is sponsored by the Parkinson Network of Arizona.
Hundreds of walkers are expected to participate on Feb. 13 at Tempe Town Beach Park, which includes 5K and two-block routes. Event registration is $20 per family and includes one event T-shirt. Additional T-shirts are $10 each. Participants are encouraged to form teams and collectively raise funds for Parkinson’s disease. Registration forms are available online at www.pnaz.kintera.org or by calling 602-406-4921.
After the event, attendees can enjoy live music provided by “Decades,” refreshments from three food trucks, a vendor health fair, magician and other family activities.
Parkinson’s disease affects nearly 500,000 people throughout the United States at any given time. It typically develops in people over 60, but early-onset symptoms can begin much sooner. The Parkinson Network of Arizona was formed in September 2006 to create awareness and raise funds for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. The center, located inside Barrow at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, is the most comprehensive Parkinson’s treatment facility in the nation.
“SCAN Health Plan Arizona is proud to once again be spear-heading this worthwhile event,” said Billie Davis, manager of marketing operations for SCAN Health Plan Arizona and a board member for the Parkinson Network of Arizona. “Both SCAN and the Parkinson Network of Arizona are committed to raising awareness of and funds for important health issues that affect seniors.”
