Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)
Special Enrollment Periods allow you to change your Medicare coverage in certain circumstances, such as:
- Being affected by a natural disaster or public health event that CMS deems qualifying
- Being diagnosed with a condition that qualifies for a chronic condition special needs plan (C-SNP)
- Losing other coverage, such as Medicaid or employer drug coverage
- Moving out of your plan's service area
Not all Special Enrollment Periods are tied to specific dates; Some occur whenever the need arises. In most cases, you may only have a limited time to change your existing plan.
Beginning on April 1, 2025, individuals wishing to use the Disaster/Emergency Special Enrollment Period must call 1-800-MEDICARE in order to make an election. Help from Medicare is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except some federal holidays. TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.
