Nuestros auxiliares de personas mayores y auxiliares de pares son miembros de SCAN que también trabajan a tiempo parcial en SCAN. Estos informantes de SCAN comparten qué es lo más importante respecto de la salud.
"Caminar es mi salvavidas: la luz del sol, el aire fresco y el cambio de entorno", dice Evelyn McDonald, auxiliar de pares. Pero Evelyn sabe que una caída puede alejarla de su pasatiempo favorito, por lo que está avanzando paso a paso (¡literalmente!) para poder hacer lo que le gusta todo el tiempo que sea posible.
"Pensar en un hueso roto no es placentero", agrega. "Por eso, antes de sentarme en mi trabajo a tiempo parcial, camino por la manzana durante 10 a 15 minutos. Me gusta saber que tengo algún tipo de reflejo muscular para atajarme en caso de trastabillar".

Conocer su "por qué" puede ser una guía útil para saber "cómo" lograrlo. Así que, pregúntese: "¿Qué considero importante en mi vida?" ¿Es ser independiente, pasar tiempo con familia y amigos, sentirme bien conmigo mismo o algo más?
Responder esas preguntas puede ayudarle a decidir en qué concentrarse a la hora de hacer ejercicio, dieta u otros esfuerzos de salud y bienestar. Y cuando tenga ganas de abandonar, tener una idea clara de qué es lo que desea lograr con su esfuerzo puede ayudarle a mantenerse firme.
… Para encontrar el camino hacia un estilo de vida saludable
Para muchas personas, poder interactuar con otras está estrechamente relacionado con su salud y felicidad. La auxiliar de personas mayores Judy Velarde se dio cuenta de que ese era su caso durante la pandemia por COVID-19, que la hizo sentir desconectada y sola. Ahora que la mayoría de las restricciones de la pandemia quedaron atrás, Judy está haciendo actividades para volver a entablar conexiones sociales.
"Lo que realmente me ayudó a volver a sentirme más positiva es hacer actividades simples, como caminar en el parque donde veo a otras personas", dice. "Las caminatas regulares son buenas no solo para nuestro cuerpo sino que también para el humor y la actitud". Estar en contacto con amigos (hablar por teléfono, almorzar y compartir libros para leer) también me ayudó a salir de la tristeza.
Use su "por qué" para motivar las decisiones…
Recuperarse de una lesión o una enfermedad, lidiar con una afección médica crónica o sentir los efectos del envejecimiento también pueden hacer que evalúe qué es importante y establezca nuevas rutinas y objetivos.
Uno de nuestros auxiliares habló con el miembro de SCAN Julio M., que estaba enfrentando una decisión difícil. Explicó que le estaba costando caminar, incluso con andador, y que sabía que estaba retrasando a sus amigos y familiares.
Entonces, cuando su médico y su familia le recomendaron que empezara a usar silla de ruedas, tuvo que pensar realmente qué le importaba más a él. ¿Era poder moverse por su cuenta, sin una silla de ruedas? En ese caso, implicaría un compromiso real a realizar fisioterapia a largo plazo. ¿O era poder ir al ritmo de su familia ahora?
Finalmente, decidió ambas. Usa una silla de ruedas cuando sale ¡y dice que a sus nietos les encanta! Pero también hace actividad física para mantener la fuerza e instaló barras de sostén en el hogar por seguridad.
El auxiliar de adultos mayores Robert Guzman coincide en que cada uno debe conocer su límite. "Es importante reconocer cuando uno está haciendo demasiado. Se trata de la cantidad correcta de actividad física, trabajo en el hogar, actividad en el trabajo y una buena alimentación. Pero lograr un equilibrio puede resultar difícil. La salud mental y la salud física van de la mano, por lo que cada uno debe saber cuándo es suficiente".

La auxiliar de adultos mayores Susanne Perez sabe qué significa que un cambio en la salud desencadene un cambio en el estilo de vida. Después de atravesar una afección médica grave el último año, Susanne cambió sus rutinas diarias. Usa su rastreador de actividad física Fitbit (incluido en su plan de SCAN) para contar los pasos. Reconoce que Fitbit le ayudó a desarrollar su capacidad pulmonar y su resistencia. También eliminó el azúcar de su alimentación para ayudar a controlar otras afecciones.
