Heading Out of Town? Four Things to Know Before You Go

With SCAN, you can travel with confidence, knowing that wherever you go, your SCAN coverage goes, too.

1. All SCAN plans provide worldwide coverage for urgent and emergency care.

Wherever you roam in the U.S. or another country, you can have peace of mind knowing you’re covered for needed medical care that can’t wait until you return home.

Emergency Care: A serious medical emergency that poses a threat to your life or body, such as:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Head injury
  • Sudden, severe headaches, paralysis or weakness
  • Problems breathing
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Severe abdominal pain

Urgent Care: A minor health condition that can’t wait for an appointment with your doctor, such as:

  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Cough, fever or sore throat
  • Earache
  • Mild headache
  • Rash, insect bite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Urinary tract infection

2. Traveling in the U.S.?

Some of your SCAN extra benefits are available wherever you are in the country. In Wichita and want to work out? Look up One Pass locations nearby. Have an ache in Anchorage? Call the Nurse Advice Line.

If you need urgent care, go to a nearby urgent care center or use your SCAN telehealth benefit. In an emergency, call 911 or head for the nearest hospital emergency room.

Healthy Travel Tip: Always show your SCAN ID card. Some out-of-area doctors and hospitals will bill SCAN directly; you’ll only have to pay your copayments. Others may require you to pay, and then you will have to ask SCAN to pay you back.

3. Traveling out of the country?

In most cases, you will pay the full charges for your urgent or emergency care when you are treated. Keep all receipts and paperwork and then file a claim with SCAN to ask for a refund.

Be aware that SCAN will reimburse you for covered emergency and urgent care services at Original Medicare reimbursement rates, less any copays associated with your care. This may be less than you paid and then you would be responsible for any remaining costs. Some travel insurance policies offer coverage that can help bridge this gap in costs.

Healthy Travel Tip: Find out if there is a local equivalent to 911 as well as medical facilities available at your destination.

4. Your SCAN plan does not include coverage for routine or preventive care while you’re away from your regular doctor.

When traveling with SCAN, you’re covered for the unexpected illnesses and injuries you can’t predict and plan for. Better to see your doctor before you leave for any follow-up care you’re due for, refills on your prescriptions to last while you’re away and any other regular care needed.
