SCAN Travel Benefit

You can enjoy your travels knowing SCAN has you covered should you have a medical emergency or urgent care need.

SCAN plans cover urgent and emergency care anywhere in the world.

We hope you stay healthy wherever you travel. But it’s good to know that if you need urgent or emergency care, you’re covered.

If you have a medical emergency or need urgent care that can’t wait until you return home, go to the nearest medical facility. Depending on whether you’re in the U.S.* or outside the country, you may be asked to pay for the full cost of care. If so, follow these steps:

  1. Save all your medical receipts and fill out the appropriate claim form. This page has more information along with the claim forms. You’ll use either:
        - Medical Services Claim Form for care received in the U.S.
        - Foreign Provider Reimbursement Form for health services provided outside the U.S.
  2. Send the completed form, receipts, and any related information to SCAN via email, fax, or mail.
  3. SCAN will reimburse you at Original Medicare rates, minus any copays, and you will be responsible for any remaining costs.

* If you’re within the U.S.: Show your SCAN member ID card. Some facilities will accept your SCAN copayment (if you have one). Otherwise, save your receipts and follow the steps above.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Benefits

Q: I spend part of the year away from home. Am I covered when I see doctors while I’m away?

Only urgent or emergency care are covered when you’re away from home—even if you have a “second home” in another SCAN service area. Routine and preventive care must be through your primary care doctor and medical group.

Q: If I have to pay for care, will I be reimbursed for the full amount I paid?

It depends. SCAN will reimburse you at Original Medicare rates, minus any copays. You’re responsible for any remaining costs.

Here’s an example:

  • If your international emergency room bill is $1,000
  • And the Original Medicare rate for those services is $800
  • And your ER copay with SCAN is $100
  • SCAN would pay $700

Q: What if I need transportation back to the U.S.? Is that covered?

No. Transportation back to the United States from another country is not covered.

Q: Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance can be a good idea, especially if you’re traveling outside the country. Look for a medical travel policy that covers costs beyond what’s included in your SCAN plan. This type of policy can protect you from paying out-of-pocket medical expenses for services not covered by your SCAN plan.

Some travel insurance covers non-medical services, such as lost luggage, travel delays or trip cancellations, so review your options closely to ensure you’re getting the coverage you need.

Q: Can I use any of my extra benefits through SCAN while I’m in another state?

Whether you’re in the next town or on the other side of the country, many SCAN benefits are available wherever you are in the United States.

Use these even when on the go:

  • OTC benefit – Use your SCAN OTC card at more than 7,000 CVS Pharmacy stores nationwide.
  • Gym benefit – Use your One Pass membership in person at gyms around the country, or online from anywhere.
  • Prescription refills – Simply go to another location of the pharmacy chain you use at home.
  • Emergency dental – Contact Delta Dental for information on what to do if you need emergency dental care.
  • Replacement eyewear – Contact EyeMed if you’ve lost or broken your prescription eyewear.
  • Telehealth benefit – Meet with a doctor or nurse practitioner over the phone or by virtual visit. This is a good option if you think you may need urgent care.
  • Nurse Advice Line – Call 24/7 if you have questions about things like medication side effects or new symptoms you may be having. A registered nurse can give you self-care tips or advise you on next steps.

Q: Can I use any of my extra benefits through SCAN while I’m traveling outside of the U.S.?

An extra benefit available to you when traveling is your One Pass gym membership. They have a wide variety of online classes you can take wherever you travel—all you need is internet access.
