about SCAN

REBELS WITH A CAUSE

We didn’t set out to be a health plan.

The intent wasn’t to offer health insurance.

In fact, our focus wasn’t on healthcare alone.

How it started

In 1977, 12 senior activists in Long Beach, California decided there had to be a better way to get the services they needed to live safely at home as they got older. It’s not that Long Beach didn’t offer these services—it did. It just wasn’t easy to access them.

When the seniors made their case, the city formed the not-for-profit Long Beach Geriatric Health Care System (catchy name, right?).

Thankfully, this new system was introduced to the public as the Senior Care Action Network. It truly was a network of services and programs, from meal delivery to home repair to medical centers, transportation, housing and more. In all, about 35 organizations took part, reflecting the cultural diversity of the people they served.

Over the years, the state and federal governments offered opportunities for SCAN to become a driving force in senior care and support. We launched our first Medicare health plan, a Social HMO, in 1984—and we’ve never looked back.

How it’s going

We’re now one of the largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans in the nation. We’re proud of our grassroots heritage. And grateful for those rebellious seniors whose drive to keep seniors healthy and independent is our mission to this day.

The story behind the beaming heart

When we ask members what they think of SCAN, there’s one thing we hear over and over: “SCAN has heart.” So when it came time to design a new logo, we used that as our inspiration.

Granted, a heart isn’t the most original symbol. So to make it truly unique—and truly SCAN—we added the beams radiating off the heart.

Twelve beams to be exact. To represent our 12 founding seniors. More than 47 years later, they remain the heart of SCAN.
