On the Heels of Landmark Year for Medicare Advantage, Leading Health Plan Adds In-Home Benefits, Introduces New Plan and Eliminates Copays for Many Mail-Order Drugs
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Oct. 1, 2018—SCAN Health Plan® today announced its 2019 health plan benefits, which include an array of additional features as a result of recent flexibility from Medicare. Reduced out-of-pocket costs, no copays for most members using the mail-order pharmacy option for many drugs and a new “premium” health plan are among the offerings for the coming year. Seniors typically have the opportunity to review and consider their health plan needs only once each year, during the Annual Election Period, making the selection of a Medicare Advantage plan one of the most important healthcare-related decisions.
“It’s been a good year for Medicare beneficiaries in that recent legislation and changes in Medicare regulations allow Medicare Advantage plans more flexibility when it comes to benefits,” said Sherry Stanislaw, senior vice president and general manager at SCAN Health Plan. “We work hard every year to offer benefits of real value to our members, so this year was especially exciting. SCAN has many new and lower-cost benefits in 2019, making us more affordable than ever. Between our coverage, quality and commitment to service, I don’t think there’s been a better time to be a SCAN member.”
Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, SCAN’s Preferred pharmacy network will include CVS, including locations in Target stores. Preferred pharmacies offer lower copayments on most covered drugs for SCAN members. Most SCAN members will also have a $0 copayment for a 90-day supply of drugs on Tiers 1 and 2 of the Formulary (list of covered drugs) when filled through SCAN’s mail-order pharmacy. In addition to CVS and mail-order, SCAN’s preferred pharmacy network is comprised of Rite Aid, Walmart, Costco, Ralph’s and Safeway/Albertsons as well as some independent pharmacies.
>New in 2019, most SCAN plans in Southern California include in-home benefits and telehealth services as well as coverage for select over-the-counter items such as pain relievers, vitamins and first aid supplies. Most SCAN members will continue to have no-cost transportation services and SilverSneakers® health club membership along with coverage for the preventive care services they need to stay healthy and independent.
A new premium plan, SCAN Prime (HMO), is available to seniors in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties in 2019. SCAN Prime includes all benefits in the SCAN’s Classic plans with even lower copayments and additional features such as routine dental coverage, which is an optional “buy-up” in most standard plans.
SCAN offers special needs plans (SNPs) with cost-effective benefits tailored for those with particular needs, such as those dually eligible for Medicare and Medi-Cal, and persons with certain chronic conditions. SCAN’s HMO SNPs include SCAN Connections (HMO SNP), which incorporates the distinct benefits of Medicare and Medi-Cal into one plan; Heart First (HMO SNP) for people with cardiovascular disease or congestive heart failure; and SCAN Balance (HMO SNP) for individuals with diabetes.
The Annual Election Period for selecting a Medicare Advantage plan for 2019 runs Oct. 15-Dec. 7, 2018. In 2019 SCAN will continue to be available to Medicare-eligible beneficiaries in 10 California counties: Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura, Sonoma, San Francisco, Napa and Santa Clara.
