SCAN Members: Information about the Change Healthcare Cyberattack

What is Change Healthcare?

You may be familiar with the name Optum Solutions, which is a large organization that includes medical groups and other divisions. Change Healthcare is a technology company that is part of Optum and owned by UnitedHealth Group. Some pharmacies in SCAN's network contract with Change Healthcare to process prescription claims.

What happened?

UnitedHealth identified a security incident at Change Healthcare on February 21, 2024. At that time, Change Healthcare disconnected its systems. That meant some members were unable to fill prescriptions right away. Change Healthcare systems are now back up and running. You should have no issues filling prescriptions or getting needed care.

How does this affect me?

When it comes to filling prescriptions or getting needed care, you should see no effect at all. The pharmacies and other providers who use Change Healthcare systems are back online.

However, UnitedHealth Group reported on April 22, 2024 that hackers claim to have stolen health and personal data from its systems. At this point, they do not know what types of data were affected and who exactly might be impacted.

You can always call SCAN Member Services to tell us about any problems that you are having, including issues related to the Change Healthcare cyberattack. Is my personal information safe?

Right now we don’t know what, if any, of our member’s personal information has been impacted by this incident. If we find that there has been a breach of personal information, you will be notified either by Change Healthcare or SCAN. This notification will tell you what information was exposed and offer identity protection resources.

Is SCAN the only company affected by this incident?

No—far from it. A wide range of healthcare organizations across the country have been affected. Law enforcement and government regulators are aware of and involved in this issue.

What is SCAN doing in response to this incident?

Keeping your health information secure is of utmost importance to SCAN. We are in ongoing contact with UnitedHealth Group and continue to closely monitor the situation for updates. If and when SCAN finds out that any of our members’ data has been impacted, we will follow our robust process, which includes notifying those members affected, as well as the authorities.
