Read This Before Going to the Dentist

1. Where do I find a dentist who will accept my SCAN dental benefits?
Use the Find a Dentist tool at deltadentalins.com/scan to find Delta Dental dentists that are part of your dental plan’s network. Be sure to verify by dentist name, not just their office location. Not every dentist within the same office is part of the same dental networks.
Where to go for covered dental care will depend on which type of dental coverage you have. Go to scanhealthplan.com/extras and click on:
- Dental if you have either a Dental HMO or the optional PPO, or
- Dental Allowance if you have an annual allowance plan.
2. Should I do anything before I go to my appointment?
One of the best ways to prepare for your visit is to get to know what your plan covers before your appointment. That will make surprises less likely once you’re in the dentist’s chair. Log in to your account at deltadentalins.com/scan to review your plan materials. You can also call Delta Dental at 1-855-830-6583 (TTY: 711).
3. Will I need to take an ID card with me?
You don’t need an ID card to use your dental benefits. Just tell your dental office, “I’m a SCAN member with dental coverage through Delta Dental.” If you ever want a copy of your dental plan ID card, you can view or print one by logging in to your account at deltadentalins.com/scan.
4. What can I expect at my first visit?
We have a checklist to help you make the most of your visit. See it—and download it—from scanhealthplan.com/checklist.
In general, your dentist will examine your entire mouth—gums to teeth to tongue. They may take x-rays, too, and clean your teeth if you’re due. In most plans, there is no cost for these preventive services.
After the exam, the dentist should present a plan for any further treatment they’re recommending.
5. How will I know if what the dentist recommends is covered by my dental benefits?
The dentist should explain what services are and aren’t covered by your plan and what your out-of- pocket costs will be.
Don’t agree to or sign agreements for any treatments or services until you ask:
- What is the procedure and why do I need it?
- Is the treatment covered under my Delta Dental benefits?
- How much will I have to pay out of pocket?
- Will I need any follow-up treatments?
If several treatments or services are recommended, you may want to ask the dentist to rank them. This will tell you what’s needed right away and what services can wait until your budget allows.
