Dental Allowance Benefit

A dental allowance benefit gives you more freedom when you need dental care.

Get started and find a dentist by contacting Delta Dental at 1-855-830-6583 (TTY: 711).

All SCAN plans provide the medically needed dental services covered by Original Medicare.

Some SCAN plans offer a Dental Allowance Benefit that puts you in the driver’s seat. You have a set amount—an allowance—to spend on dental care for the year. You can see any dentist from the Delta Dental Medicare Advantage/SCAN EPO network, which includes many popular local dentists.

With SCAN’s Dental Allowance Benefit:

  • You pay $0 for all procedures up to your allowance amount
  • There is no waiting period before you can see a dentist
  • Preventive care does not count toward your allowance
  • For other care, reduced rates apply toward your allowance
  • You choose any dentist from the Delta Dental Medicare Advantage/SCAN EPO network

Check your Evidence of Coverage to see exactly what your plan includes.

Frequently asked questions about the dental allowance

Q: I have a SCAN Dental Allowance plan, so how do I know what dentists I can see?

Your plan lets you chose from a broad network of dentists. In fact, you can see any dentist in the Delta Dental Medicare Advantage PPO network. The Allowance plan is not a PPO plan, but your SCAN Allowance lets you choose from the same extensive network of dentists.

Go to the Delta Dental Medicare Advantage/SCAN EPO online directory. Or call Delta Dental if you need a printed directory: 1-855-830-6583 (TTY: 711).

Q. How is my Dental Allowance calculated?

Your allowance is determined by the amount Delta Dental pays the dentist. Once your allowance amount is met, your Dental Allowance Benefit is exhausted. You will have to pay out of pocket for any additional dental care you may need the rest of the year.

Q. Should I ask for a treatment plan from my dentist?

Yes. It’s important to get a treatment plan before getting any services from a dentist. When you go in for an initial evaluation, you can request a treatment plan. The plan should include the codes and costs of the services being recommended.

Because your allowance amount is limited, you have to pay out of pocket for anything past the limit. If you’re concerned about the cost, ask your dentist to list the services in order of importance. That way, you can plan your expenses.

If you have questions about treatment plans, call Delta Dental at 1-855-830-6583 (TTY: 711).

Q: Do I need to have a primary dentist in order for my treatment to be covered?

No, with a SCAN Dental Allowance plan, you don’t need to choose a primary dentist to oversee your care. As long as you see dentists in the Delta Dental Medicare Advantage/SCAN EPO network, your care is covered up to your annual Allowance amount.

Q. The dentist I selected isn’t available when I want to see them. Can I see another dentist at the same location?

Be sure to ask first! Not every dentist at an office location accepts the same coverage or is part of the same networks. Your Allowance coverage only applies to dentists that are part of the Delta Dental Medicare Advantage/SCAN EPO network. The office staff can confirm this for you before you schedule an appointment. Or check the online directory.
