SCAN offers an over-the-counter and grocery benefit for the following plans:
- SCAN Connections
- SCAN Connections at Home
- SCAN Strive
- SCAN Allied
OTC + grocery allowance
All members of the above plans can use their allowance on over-the-counter items. And members who meet certain criteria can also spend their allowance on grocery items.
OTC + Grocery Benefit provides:
- A debit card that’s reloaded every month with your allowance amount
- Your choice of thousands of eligible health and wellness items
- Eligible food items include fruit, salad kits, dairy products, frozen meals, pantry staples and more

- Walmart
- Vons
- Safeway
- Albertsons
- Family Dollar
- Kroger
- and more!

Frequently asked questions about the OTC + Grocery allowance
Q. How do I find out if I’m eligible to use this benefit for groceries, too?
The grocery portion of this benefit is an SSBCI benefit, which stands for Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill. You must meet eligibility requirements before the benefit is provided. Qualifying chronic conditions for the SSBCI benefit include cardiovascular disorders, chronic heart failure, diabetes, cancer, and chronic lung disorders. Other chronic conditions may apply. Medical records will be used to establish qualifications for the benefit.

Q: What types of groceries are included if I have the grocery allowance?
Eat well and feel great with the wide range of eligible groceries:
- Beans and legumes
- Dairy
- Fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables
- Grains such as bread and pasta
- Meat and seafood
- Nutrition shakes and bars
- Pantry staples like flour and spices
- Soups
- Water
The allowance can’t be used to purchase tobacco, alcohol, candy, soda, chips or non-food items.
