“I want patients to know they can always rely on me for help.
I want a personal relationship with them in which I know them, and they know me,” Gladys says. She strives to bring high- quality, intimate care to every SCAN member in her care. She wants each patient to feel the way she did when her appendix ruptured at age 13. “I got to experience first-hand what nurses do,” she says. “I remember one nurse in particular being so understanding and caring towards me.” She knew then that she wanted to help others in the same way.
When caring for older adults, Gladys asks herself, “How would I want my parents/grandparents to be treated by a healthcare
professional?” The answer motivates her to provide the best care that will make a difference in her patients’ lives.
At home, Gladys has two toddlers who count on her, too, but they also understand the importance of their mommy’s work. “They say, ‘Mommy helps sick people’,” Gladys says. “It is such a blessing to see them already display empathy and love to others as they see me do in my line of work. I am blessed to do what I do.”
Gladys received a Master’s Degree in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner certificate from Charles R. Drew School of medicine.
